Slide Cavazzo Lake

Cavazzo Lake

Lake Cavazzo (Lât di Cjavaç in standard Friulian, Lât in Carnic Friulian [1], Lâc in the local dialect) is the largest natural lake in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Also known as the lake of the Three Municipalities, a denomination proposed in 1948 by a Consortium which then brought together the three municipalities bathed by the lake itself (Cavazzo Carnico, Trasaghis, Bordano), this denomination is not recognized by the municipality of Cavazzo Carnico.

The reeds, also called fragmineto for the botanical species that composes it (Phragmites australis), occupies the southern part of the lake. It is a breeding place for many fish, among the native ones are: pike (Esox cisalpinus), tench (Tinca tinca), eels (Anguilla anguilla), bleak (Alburnus arborella), chub (Squalius squalus), minnow (Phoxinus lumaireul), stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), agon (Alosa agone) and brown trout (Salmo trutta). While among the non-native ones there are: carp (Cyprinus carpio), perch (Perca fluviatilis) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).
